MORNING SICKNESS

MORNING SICKNESS

You have just found out that you are pregnant but even before the joy and delight has settled in you start to feel queasy. It quickly progresses into tired and queasy and then suddenly nausea and perhaps dry retching. then you start to vomit and sometimes it can be at any time of the day or night. And this just isn’t tallying with what you have read in the numerous pregnancy books packed on your bookshelf. Sleep gives you some relief but then your waking hours seem longer with every minute feeling like your stomach is not yours but some toxic, yukky, cesspool of vomit trying to get out if not spewing out of control.Yes. I am talking about the title given to nausea and vomiting in pregnancy called ‘morning sickness’

Now the good thing about this condition is that morning sickness is unpleasant but poses no real danger to the mother or her baby. However, if the nausea and vomiting is bad enough to severely limit eating and drinking, it can cause problems for both mother and baby relating to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. This often results in the woman being hospitalized for intravenous fluids and perhaps some medication.

However, if a woman seeks help from an acupuncturist for this problem as soon as she starts to feel sick,it can drastically alter the severity if not totally resolve the problem. Depending on the diagnosis this can be a simple 2/3 treatments to more often over the period of feeling nauseated or vomiting. From a TCM point of view there can be several factors at play. However generally speaking the reason for this problem is that the stomach is thrown out because there is an energetic channel that runs through the womb and the stomach called the Penetrating Vessel. This Vessel is responsible for blood and energy on a deeper level and its overlap with the stomachs energetics knocks the stomachs descending action therefore causing anything from nausea to severe vomiting. There can be other factors at play complicating the case like damp, phlegm and heart, however these are too complicated to mention here.

As a woman who has had three different sorts of pregnancies, I can tell you that in each one of them I have been treated with acupuncture for different levels of nausea/vomiting. And I can testify that acupuncture enabled me to get on with my day to day living including in my last pregnancy the stomach to study for my final exams for Chinese herbal medicine! The acupuncture treatment not only helps with the nausea but it is a supportive, non invasive measure that most importantly does not harm either the woman or her precious baby. And has now finally been proven to be a legitimate way to stop morning sickness.
